Granite Grey is a private, safe, and secure unit featuring its own garden, kitchenette, and veranda—perfect for enjoying a traditional braai while taking in views of the iconic Paarl Rock.
The name Granite Grey was chosen in honour of Paarl Boys’ High School, the alma mater of the owner, and a school that has shaped many of South Africa’s leaders in business, sport, and culture.
The school’s anthem referring to the name of our self-catering unit:
Neath the far-famed rock of granite grey
Stands a school the best all people say
Boys and youths to train and educate
Model men to rear for Church and State
Or for tended field, for track and sporting ground
And its name and fame throughout the land resound.
For the school, renowned from Berg to Vaal
Is the Boys’ High School of Upper Paarl.

Our guesthouse wouldn’t be complete without a room named in honour of the jewel of the Cape Winelands—Paarl itself.
When our town was founded at the foot of Paarl Rock in 1690, it was named Paarl. The name, meaning “a pearl” in Dutch, was inspired by the way the granite rocks (now known as Paarl Rock) glistened like pearls or diamonds after rainfall.
In Afrikaans, the word for pearl is “pêrel.”
