Johan van Rensburg

Johan and Christelle van Rensburg are the owners and hosts who warmly welcome you to their beautiful guesthouse, Afrika Pearl Guesthouse.

Johan is the architect who designed the private home where Madiba lived on the grounds of the Victor Verster Prison, where he served the final 14 months of his 27-year prison sentence.

Johan is an absolute walking encyclopedia on Paarl and its surroundings. He knows hidden gems such as the botanical gardens with natural lily ponds tucked away in the mountains, secret dirt roads on Bainskloof Pass, and many other historic treasures that the average tourist would never find.

Johan is a third-generation van Rensburg, born in this house, which was built around 1900. When his parents had to move to an old age home, Johan and Christelle couldn’t bring themselves to sell the house, steeped in history and filled with precious memories. Instead, they decided to lovingly refurbish it and share their unpretentious, farm-style home with guests.

Johan’s vast knowledge of Paarl allows him to share fascinating historical facts and hidden treasures with visiting guests.

Christelle is a qualified nurse who ensures that guests perfect the art of ‘stoep-sitting’ on the veranda in front of the guesthouse. With her go-to attitude and warm hospitality, she makes everyone feel at home.

Both are well-known Paarl residents, respected in the community, and will leave no stone unturned to ensure that your stay is as memorable and comfortable as possible.

Historically, the Afrikaans 'stoep' was built around the 'boere' (farmers) rectangular or square houses to shield them from the scorching African sun. Sitting on the porch, also known as ‘stoep-sit,’ was a tradition enjoyed early in the mornings or late in the afternoons when cooler breezes would appear.

Early mornings were for enjoying a cup of coffee and rusks (‘boeretroos en beskuit’), while late afternoons would be for a cup of coffee and cookies (‘boeretroos en koekies’).

At Afrika Pearl Guesthosue, we invite you to embrace the art of ‘stoep-sit,’ finding tranquillity and serenity to revive your mind, body, spirit, and soul!

The first Afrikaans newspaper in South Africa was printed just up the road from Afrika Pearl Guesthouse, which is situated on the corner of 4th and Patriot streets in Paarl.

Johan recalls finding old printing blocks as a child in his friends’ house – the building that originally housed the first Afrikaans newspaper in South Africa.

The Paarl Post was first published on 14 January 1905 as a direct successor to the famous rebel newspaper Die Afrikaanse Patriot, the first Afrikaans newspaper in South Africa, and it is still printed weekly.
