Johan van Rensburg

Johan and Christelle van Rensburg are the owners and hosts that welcome you to their beautiful guesthouse, Afrika Pearl.

Johan is the architect that designed the private home Madiba lived in on the grounds of the Victor Verster prison where he served the last 14 months of his 27-year jail sentence.

Johan is an absolute walking encyclopedia on Paarl and its surroundings and knows hidden gems like the Botanical gardens with natural lilly ponds hidden away in the mountains, secret dirt roads on Bainskloof pass and many more historic treasures not to be found by the accidental tourist.

He is a third-generation van Rensburg, born in this house built around 1900. When his parents had to move to an old age home, he and Christelle could not sell the home steeped in history and filled with precious memories. They decided to lovingly refurbish it and share their unpretentious farm styled home with guests.

Johan is a walking encyclopaedia about all things Paarl and shares interesting and historic treasures and facts with visiting guests.

Christelle is a qualified nurse. She makes sure that guests perfect the art of ‘stoep-sit’ on the veranda in front of the guesthouse and her go-to attitude and warm hospitality makes everyone feel welcome.

Both are well-known Paarlites, respected in the community, and will leave no stone unturned to ensure that your stay is as memorable and comfortable as can be.

Historically the Afrikaans ‘stoep’ was built around the ‘boere’ (farmers’) rectangular or square houses to shield their houses from the scorching African sun. Sitting on the porch, also know as ‘stoep-sit’, was done early in the mornings or late afternoons when cooler air breezes would appear.
Early mornings were time to have a cup of coffee and rusks (‘boeretroos en beskuit’) and late afternoons would be for a cup of coffee and cookies (‘boeretroos en koekies’).
Afrika Pearl welcomes you to also practise the art of ‘stoep-sit’, finding tranquillity, and serenity to revive mind, body, spirit and soul!

The first Afrikaans newspaper in South Africa was printed up the road from Afrika Pearl Guesthouse which is situated on the corner of 4th and Patriot streets in Paarl.
Johan recalls finding old printing blocks as a child in his friends’ house – the building was the building that originally housed the first Afrikaans News Paper in South Africa.
The Paarl Post was first published on 14 January 1905 as a direct successor to the famous rebel newspaper Die Afrikaanse Patriot, the first Afrikaans newspaper in South Africa and is still being printed weekly.
